How to lose all your Twitter followers from ONE Post?

by Tyler Perroux on November 28, 2009

Now Twitter is a wonerful tool for Internet Marketers, and advertisers, but there is one thing that most people seem to forget, that Twitter is a Social Network, not an advertising billboard.

Now there is a wonderful thing about Twitter which can increase your conversion rates, and your relationships on Twitter called Direct Messaging(Private Messages).

Now this is a wonderful way to build relationships with your Followers, but most people frown upon this as most marketers use it wrong, and instead of it turning out to high conversion rates, it ends up being spam. People hate you, People block you, and your followers unfollow you, and you are flagged by Twitter as a spammer which can lead to suspension or account termination(BAD).

Now if you use this the proper way you can recieve:

  1. High conversation rates between you and your followers
  2. An increase in click-through rates, and traffic
  3. An Increase in conversions.

Now Twitter limits you to 140 characters, so you must use every letter very wisely.

Don’t try to sell a user something at first, instead build the relationship.

VERY BAD DIRECT MESSAGES:

  1. Hey there! Come and check out my blog at http://dumb.url/dosl
  2. Hey get more traffic [affiliate.clickbank.link]
  3. OMG GET THIS BRAND NEW SYSTEM WHERE EVERYTHING IS IN CAPS(bad bad bad)
  4. (real DM) Hey Thanks for following me – I’m looking forward to reading your tweets! Check out a new system in prelaunch: http://shortURL

The latter was a horrible thing. Perfect affiliate link disguided by an iframe on another site. This Twitter user was immediatly blocked and unfollowed. If you avalanche a user with DM’s or tweets, they don’t like this either(especially if they have phone updates for DM’s)

Now let’s look at some good examples of DM’s

  1. Hey, thanks for following me! Are you currently apart of any projects?
  2. Hello there, How are you doing today?
  3. Hi, by any chance do you have a blog that I can check out?
  4. Thanks for following me, Your awesome :]

Now giving your followers attension will make them take action to get to know you better, which can lead to a good relationship, which can lead to you making some extra money or friends online.

Basically, the more attention and value you give to other people, the more attention and value is returned. Social karma anyone? If you are currently doing any of the bad things above, try to tweak your DM’s or tweets to reflect the good ones, and you can get better results immediatly.

To your success

P.S. Don’t use scheduled tweets that post every so many minutes or hours, as this can still be seen as spam. Change up your tweet, and repost with a new URL, so it looks unique :]
